“Doing your art” … What does that mean ?

unnamed-1

“He’s off doing his art thing” or, ” she is out there watercoloring somewhere “, “workin’ in the studio” or even, ” he/she’s got art deadlines to meet” . Whatever “it” is it’s what we do … What we must do and what we want to do … Because we are artists !
When I was a kid I remember looking up the meaning of the word “art”. That was a long time ago and perhaps simpler times but the definition was so short and so simple it was; “to objectify a feeling”. If you look up that word now be prepared for five paragraphs of dry explanations and definitions that pretty much conclude that … Art is … “objectifying a feeling”.
Having taught most every form of visual art to thousands of art students over the last thirty years, I have seen just about every type of artist. There are the ones, like me at a smorgasbord, who can’t wait to try EVERYTHING. Then there are those that when introduced to a new medium have one of those past-lives epiphanies, look up into a heavenly beam of light and say to themselves, “this is what I am supposed to do”.

For some it is just black and white, scratchboard, pencil, pen and ink, charcoal . Others immerse themselves in watercolors or oils/acrylics, pastels or colored pencils. Still other feel the spiritual push to go 3D and find there calling punching clay, chiseling stone or carving wood.

Whoever you are and whatever your artistic pursuits and goals I want to help you thru tips, examples, funny stories and recommendations to help you get better at … “Objectifying your feelings”
